The purpose of the beginner Barbarian guide is to provide you with a build
and item recommendations that will reliably carry you from leveling, through
the pre-Torment difficulties and get you into low Torment farming, without
requiring specific legendary or set bonuses.
This guide is part of our Barbarian Class Hub,
which also includes early builds for fresh 70 characters.

Passive Skills |

Note that while the skills and runes recommended in the build are
specifically chosen to be available at an early level and remain a solid pick
throughout the leveling and early character progression, you will have to
temporarily work with other skills as the build gradually unlocks. To
familiarize yourself with the class, experimentation is strongly
encouraged.
The build revolves around the DoT superiority of Rend, capable of
tagging multiple enemies with a lethal effect while allowing you to move on,
increasing leveling and early farming efficiency. To further increase its
potency, you will seek out big packs with either Leap or
Furious Charge, and draw a crowd towards the carnage with
Ground Stomp Wrenching Smash. Buff up regularly with War Cry, and
activate Wrath of the Berserker whenever you engage elites or a large fight
ensues.
3.
Skills, Runes, and Passives
The basis of every build lies in its chosen damage dealing skills. As they
invariably require resource or cooldown management mechanics of some sort, and
such are scarce for low level and less geared characters, you will focus on fewer
damage dealing abilities early on. The typical early game build will feature a
dominant damage dealer, a mobility skill, buffs and/or shields, and resource
generators (either active or passive). The recommended split is:
- Slot 1 — Damage dealing ability: Making his own twist of the
hit-and-move strategies of power leveling, the Barbarian acquires a powerful DoT
in the form of Rend as early as level 5. You will enlarge its radius soon
after, taking the Ravage rune at level 11, and stick with it for a
significant portion of your leveling. During the final stretch, and especially
once you hit max level, it is recommended to switch to the powerful
Bloodbath rune, basically triggering several Rends at the cost
of one. - Slot 2 — Generator: Since Fury does not replenish on its own
and Rend can be a costly ability in the thick of battle, you will need
to add some form of resource generation to the build. Early on, primary skills
can fulfill the purpose — either AoE like Cleave (level 3) with
Rupture (level 9), or ranged like Weapon Throw (level 17) with
Ricochet (level 25). Midway through leveling, you will gain
the Wind Shear rune for Whirlwind, making the spender almost
self-sufficient. If you are confident in handling the Barbarian resources at
that point, you should add Whirlwind in to significantly boost your
damage and improve combat mobility (as channeling the skill removes enemy
collision). - Slot 3 — Mobility skill: You have two significant options for
the role, each bringing its own benefits to the build. Leap is available
at level 8, and following the gambling trick outlined in the gearing section,
will essentially be tripled by Lut Socks from the earliest character
progression stages. This will significantly increase its utility with the
Iron Impact rune (level 14), allows it to cover much great distances and
makes it generate 45 Fury. If the gambling strat does not work out due to RNG,
or you simply choose not to follow it, you still have a great movement tool in
the form of Sprint (level 16), further improved by the Marathon
rune at level 38. - Slot 4 — Utility: You can make a definite improvement to your
AoE efficiency with Rend by adding Ground Stomp to the build as
early as level 4. As if the base stun effect does not disable monsters enough,
you will be improving it with the pull effect of the Wrenching Smash rune
at the tender level 18, and keeping it throughout the leveling process. The Fury
generation aspect is simply gravy on top. - Slots 5 and 6 — Buffs: While you can use the protective
Threatening Shout nearly at the start (level 14), it is recommended that
you swap it for War Cry when it becomes available at level 28. The latter
has a larger radius of the party-wide buff, synergizes better with
farming-oriented legendary effects like Chilanik’s Chain, and has a
generous restorative rune in the form of Charge!, unlocking at level 35.
Your final active skill slot will be reserved for the trademark Barbarian
self-buff, Wrath of the Berserker, arriving mid-leveling at level 30. Its
strongest rune, Insanity, comes shortly thereafter (level 40) and will
remain with you well into the endgame. - Passives: Some of the strongest passive options for Barbarians will
unlock very early on, adding nicely to a beginner build. Ruthless
opens up at level 10, and adds a whopping 40% multiplicative damage increase vs.
injured enemies — ensuring Rend will finish them off in due time.
Nerves of Steel comes shortly thereafter at level 13, adding a cheat death
failsafe to this head on, in-your-face build. Arguably the most utility-packed
defensive passive, Superstition arrives at the level 30 junction, and
adds surprisingly effective, combat-based resource gain on top of its obvious
damage mitigation. Unlocking last (level 68), but likely staying forever in your
passive selection, Rampage directly influences damage and toughness by
scaling your Strength.
4.
Gear and Stats Priorities
As the leveling process in Diablo 3 is relatively quick, specific legendary
recommendations are impossible. During leveling finding upgrades is frequent, so
your gear will be swapped in and out within the span of a few minutes. Following
the in-game comparison system and the stat priorities outlined in the tables
below will result in a solid character throughout the leveling journey.
The table below is meant to point you in a general correct direction and is
by no means indicative of the exact rolls you want to go for. They can vary
greatly from build to build and it is always preferable to refer to our
exact guide page. If you simply use the rolls below however, and roll for skill
damage on the applicable pieces:
- Ancient Spear, Hammer of the Ancients, Whirlwind,
Seismic Slam on helms and boots; - Furious Charge, Avalanche, Earthquake, Rend,
Revenge, Overpower, Call of the Ancients on shoulders and
chest; - Cleave, Weapon Throw, Frenzy, Bash on
belt and pants.
Wherever it says ‘Elemental damage’, match it to the rune of your damaging
skill of choice. You will come out with a functional spec, and probably not too
far off from what we would recommend in a dedicated build!

Note that skill damage and elemental damage recommendations only apply if the
majority of your damage is done through that skill or element. For alt characters
however, sockets take priority above all other attributes, since you can slot
high level gems and benefit massively from their stat increase. For the purposes
of an alt character, leveling a Gem of Ease to level 25 and socketing it
in a level 70 weapon will be the single biggest boost you can provide to the
leveling process.

The purpose of the beginner Barbarian guide is to provide you with a build
and item recommendations that will reliably carry you from leveling, through
the pre-Torment difficulties and get you into low Torment farming, without
requiring specific legendary or set bonuses. The guide also includes a section
for Seasonal Barbarians, explaining how best to take advantage of the free set
from Haedrig’s Gifts.
The purpose of the Barbarian Class Hub page is to acquaint you with the class,
to serve as a starting point for all early game builds (leveling, as well as
starting out with any of the sets), and to introduce you to sets, legendaries
and overall item stats important to Barbarians.
1.
Why choose the Barbarian?
Choose the Barbarian if you want to experience the brutality of melee combat
in its full, blood-drenched glory. The Barbarian deals in charging, slicing and
smashing demons to a pulp — enraged with maddening frenzy, but standing
strong and unrelenting through mighty war cries. You will build up your
energies by rampaging around in combat, leaping and shouting, and channel the
built up Fury into massive, sweeping strikes. The Barbarian is the epitomy of a
ruthless brawler in Diablo 3.
2.
Progression (Seasonal or Not Seasonal)
Your progression on a given character always start with leveling to 70. To
help you with that, we have a beginner leveling build that you can access using
the link below.
2.2.
Haedrig Gifts’ Season 28 Starter Build
After reaching Level 70, the easiest way to start gearing up and progressing towards
the end-game is by using the set given by the Haedrig’s Gifts. Haedrig’s Gifts
are cache-like rewards that drop 2 pieces of a fixed class-specific set after
completing chapters II, III, and IV of the Seasonal Journey. Having
a full 6-piece set bonus available to you will skyrocket your character’s power well
in the mid-to-high Torments. This makes the early portion of the Seasonal Journey your
first priority upon reaching Level 70.
This Season, Barbarians will find the Horde of the Ninety Savages set in their
Haedrig’s Gifts. We have an early progression build for this set, which you can
find by clicking the link below.
While you get a fixed free set at the start of every Season, it is not
unreasonable to assume you will attain other sets in quick succession. If you
are interested in switching around your playstyle, take a look at the beginner
points for other sets below, and note to which endgame builds they point you
after.
To learn how to gear up quickly and approach a character’s progression in
general, check out our Beginner Seasonal Guide.
It includes advice and tactics related to gambling Blood Shards, doing
Bounties, Regular, Greater and Challenge
Rifts, and using Kanai’s Cube for easy
upgrades.
Certain items can be targeted through the completion of bounties or boss
kills. The following is a list of such items, in order of importance for the
class.
- Ring of Royal Grandeur is a legendary from Act I caches that reduces
the number of set items required for set bonuses by one. While it might not be
immediately useful, obtaining powerful bonuses (such as the 4- and 6- piece set
bonuses of any set) as early as possible for a huge spike in character power is
an opportunity you should not pass up. Doing bounties will be inevitable for
crafting materials anyway, so optimize your farming time and get this ring as
soon as possible. - Reaper’s Wraps are meant to assist classes and builds with resource
management problems. These bracers restore up to 30% of your Fury reserves when
you get healed by a health globe — an easy trigger if you keep an eye on
the battlefield. Note that these bracers are craftable, and the plan for their
creation drops when you kill the Act V boss Malthael on any difficulty.
Reaper’s Wraps are reasonably attractive to Barbarians, as they frequently
suffer from resource issues in the early game, before they acquire items like
Fury of the Ancients or Bul-Kathos’s Oath set. - Avarice Band is an Act III cache legendary ring that extends your
pickup radius by up to 30 yards as you pick up gold. This unassuming bonus has
the potential to turn in the strongest source of defense during normal rifts due
to its synergy with Boon of the Hoarder and Goldwrap. Their powers
combined, they can render your character practically invulnerable even in the
highest of Torment difficulties. - Illusory Boots are an Act II cache legendary item that removes enemy
collision — a staple of support builds in Greater Rifts, as their precise
positioning for party-wide buffs and enemy disables dictates the course of
Greater Rift progress. Barbarians have been staple supports for many patches now,
with several party-wide damage buffs and plenty of damage reduction to add to the
group, making Illusory Boots reasonably attractive to the class. - Gloves of Worship are an Act II cache legendary that extends the
duration of Shrines to 10 minutes, a very decent farming effect that is usually
stored in Kanai’s Cube. The combined power of Empowered Shrines (doubled resource
gain, halved cooldowns), Frenzied Shrines (25% Attack Speed) and Fleeting Shrines
(25% increase to Movement Speed and 20-yard pickup radius), often refreshing
before their 10-minute duration, is a huge buff during normal rifts. Barbarians
are among the classes that can benefit from Gloves of Worship, as the armor
Cube slots of their most common farming specs are often flexible enough to fit
the item in. - Envious Blade is an Act III cache dagger with one of the most powerful
speedfarming bonuses in the game — a guaranteed Critical Hit against
enemies at full health. A well equipped character using this dagger can oneshot
entire screens of enemies in a suitable farming difficulty. While class-specific
legendaries are generally considered more important to Barbarian builds,
Envious Blade is not completely out of the question as a Cube effect for
the weapon slot. - Pride’s Fall is a helm obtained through Act III cache bounties, whose
legendary effect reduces resource costs by 30% after not taking damage for 5
seconds. Almost never fighting at a range that can abuse this power, Barbarians
do not consider farming Pride’s Fall a priority.
The majority of the gear will be found by random chance as you farm normally,
by killing monsters, opening chests, gambling at Kadala and upgrading rare items
at the Cube. While the list below is not exhaustive, these are some of the pieces
to seek, spend blood shards on, or upgrade yellows for — in order of
priority:
- Sets: While the seasonal journey will reward you with a complete set
through Haedrig’s Gifts, gambling for armor set pieces still makes sense —
to improve lackluster pieces, or complete class sets other than the gifted one.
The Barbarian sets are:- Wrath of the Wastes:
Helm of the Wastes, Pauldrons of the Wastes, Gauntlet of the Wastes,
Cuirass of the Wastes, Tasset of the Wastes and
Sabaton of the Wastes; - The Legacy of Raekor:
Raekor’s Will, Raekor’s Burden, Raekor’s Wraps,
Raekor’s Heart, Raekor’s Breeches and Raekor’s Striders); - Might of the Earth:
Eyes of the Earth, Spires of the Earth, Pull of the Earth,
Spirit of the Earth, Weight of the Earth and
Foundation of the Earth); - Immortal King’s Call:
Immortal King’s Triumph, Immortal King’s Irons,
Immortal King’s Eternal Reign, Immortal King’s Tribal Binding,
Immortal King’s Stature, Immortal King’s Stride and
Immortal King’s Boulder Breaker); - Horde of the Ninety
Savages: Skull of Savages, Spines of Savages,
Claws of Savages, Markings of Savages, Leggings of Savages,
Heel of Savages; - Bul-Kathos’s Oath:
Bul-Kathos’s Solemn Vow and Bul-Kathos’s Warrior Blood).
- Wrath of the Wastes:
- The weapon is by far the most impactful item on your damage output, putting
a priority on the weapon slot as the first to obtain an ancient item for. Due to
its higher Blood Shard cost (75 for weapons vs. 25 for armor pieces and
off-hands), you should delay weapon gambling — avoiding it at the start of
character progression and only considering it when you start perfecting your
gear. If you simply need a specific weapon, you will get a much better deal with
the Upgrade Rare recipe in Kanai’s Cube. The Hope of Cain recipe (1 rare item,
25 Death’s Breaths, 50 of white, blue and yellow crafting materials) will only
produce the type of item you put in (i.e. wands), cutting out all other weapons
from the RNG pool that you would have to deal with through regular gambling at
Kadala. Mighty Weapons are the Barbarian-specific weapons (both one- and
two-handed) you can easily target through upgrading rares, with valuable and
build-defining mighty weapons such as Bul-Kathos’s Oath set
( Bul-Kathos’s Solemn Vow and Bul-Kathos’s Warrior Blood),
Oathkeeper, Ambo’s Pride, Fjord Cutter,
Blade of the Tribes, Immortal King’s Boulder Breaker,
The Gavel of Judgment, Fury of the Vanished Peak and
Bastion’s Revered. Other weapons valuable to the Barbarian include
In-geom, Little Rogue and The Slanderer, The Furnace,
Standoff and The Three Hundredth Spear. - Jewelry has a huge influence on your DPS, but similarly to weapons it is
expensive to gamble (50 shards for rings, 100 for amulets). When searching for
specific jewelry rolls, you should consider upgrading rares instead.
Band of Might deserves special mention here, as it is the most powerful
mitigation jewelry at the disposal of Barbarians, overshadowing the
class-agnostic Unity. Curiously, the ring has a level requirement of
11, meaning it can drop very early on, or be gambled as early as level 1. This
enables the strategy of gambling rings on a level 1 Barbarian, quickly yielding
a Band of Might from the tiny RNG pool of a starting character. Note that
the item’s level 1 stats will make it obsolete for endgame, but
Band of Might‘s bonus is powerful enough to carry your survivability
throughout leveling, and to be cubed immediately at level 70. All three jewelry
sets can be utilized by Barbarians, in order of importance: the Endless Walk set,
The Compass Rose and The Traveler’s Pledge; the Legacy of Nightmares
set, Litany of the Undaunted and The Wailing Host, and the Bastions
of Will set, Focus and Restraint. Other build-specific
Barbarian jewelry includes Squirt’s Necklace, Convention of Elements,
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac and Oculus Ring. - Boots deserve special mention due to the gambling trick you can apply.
Barbarians generally seek one legendary pair of boots, Lut Socks, and
only need it for Kanai’s Cube armor slot in beginner and Might of the Earth set
builds. Similarly to Band of Might, Lut Socks have a required level
of 11 — they start dropping early and can be gambled from level 1. In turn,
this allows the strategy of gambling boots on a level 1 Barbarian, almost
removing the RNG factor of gambling and producing low level Lut Socks
— perfectly serviceable for the Cube. - Barbarians have Mighty Belts, a class-specific item type for the waist slot
that mixes in with regular belts to produce a fairly large RNG pool. Despite that
downside, it is still recommended to gamble on belts due to their cheap price,
as well as the substantial impact of Mighty Belts on several Barbarian builds.
You have to be on the lookout for progression belts like Pride of Cassius,
Dread Iron, Girdle of Giants and Lamentation, as well as
the speedrun-oriented Chilanik’s Chain and the the cross-class utility belt
Goldwrap. - There are plenty of bracers in demand for Barbarians — obvious
class-specific legendaries like Mortick’s Brace,
Bracers of Destruction, Bracers of the First Men,
Skular’s Salvation and Vambraces of Sescheron spread across builds
for their dedicated skills, as well as generic bracers like
Ancient Parthan Defenders and Nemesis Bracers finding their rightful
places in progression and speedfarming specs respectively. The cheap Blood Shard
cost of the slot makes bracers very attractive to gamble. They are also a very
efficient slot to gamble on when starting out with a Barbarian, since both
Bracers of Destruction and Bracers of the First Men can be gambled at
level 1 and, when coupled with their dedicated skills, can comfortably carry you
through the leveling process. - Barbarians have a few shoulder pieces to watch out for, part of three major
Barbarian setups — Mantle of Channeling for the Cube with Wrath of
the Wastes set, Fury of the Ancients for Immortal King builds, and
Vile Ward for Furious Charge-centric Raekor variants. - Most remaining armor slots only have one or even no desirable items for
Barbarians. In the long run, you will want to find Aquila Cuirass and
Cindercoat (chest pieces); Depth Diggers (pants);
Leoric’s Crown (helm); and Stone Gauntlets and St. Archew’s Gage
(gloves).
4.
Stats To Strive For
The table below is meant to point you in a general correct direction and is

Your armor sockets should be taken up by the highest tier Ruby gems you can
afford at the time, the weapon — with your highest Emerald, while the helm
should be filled by a Diamond to reduce Cooldowns. When you stumble upon jewelry
with good primary stats and a socket, you should start dabbling into Legendary
Gems. The Legendary Gems to consider for Crusaders are, in order of importance:

---|---|

Torso and Pants |

Kanai’s Cube choices are highly build- and content-specific, making them hard
to summarize. Generally speaking, Barbarians should store the powers of the
following items in the Cube as soon as they have the materials available:
The Furnace, In-geom, Messerschmidt’s Reaver,
Oathkeeper, Ambo’s Pride, Fjord Cutter,
Blade of the Tribes, The Gavel of Judgment,
Fury of the Vanished Peak, Bastion’s Revered, Standoff,
The Three Hundredth Spear, Pride of Cassius,
Dread Iron, Girdle of Giants, Lamentation, Vile Ward,
Mortick’s Brace, Bracers of Destruction, Bracers of the First Men,
Skular’s Salvation, Vambraces of Sescheron, Lut Socks,
Aquila Cuirass, Nemesis Bracers, Band of Might,
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac, Ring of Royal Grandeur,
Convention of Elements and Avarice Band.
The Kanai’s Cube can be used for much more than simply extracting Legendary powers from items. Please
refer to our Kanai’s Cube guide for more information.

The Whirlwind (WW) Barbarian uses the Wrath of the Wastes set and has become one of the strongest builds in the game after having Rend added to its bonus. The core concept is that Whirlwind applies the Damage over Time (DoT) effect from Rend using Ambo’s Pride. You spin and move through the monster while DoTing and killing them quickly.
Some people call this build «Rend Barb» while others call it «Whirlwind Barb», however the build’s main damage comes from Rend as Whirlwind just applies the Rend to do all the damage.
This build excels many other builds in Diablo at Speed farming content as it is lighting quick and deals a tremendous amount of damage while constantly moving.
This is an Area Damage (AD) build, since selfcast Rend can proc it. However, any Rend cast by Ambo’s Pride does not have this property (see Mechanics), requiring you to weave in Rends manually while spinning around with Whirlwind. Due to the pulling power of Ancient Spear Rage Flip and Ground Stomp Wrenching Smash this build is excellent for high solo push on the leaderboards. So let’s get started!

Core Setup
Items
- We use the Wrath of the Wastes set for the crazy damage increase and toughness while channeling Whirlwind and for three seconds after.
- Lamentation provides a Rend damage buff and makes Rend stack twice on the same target.
- Ambo’s Pride lets us apply the damage over time from Rend in just 1 second.
- On Jewelry slots you can choose between:
Squirt’s Necklace, Focus & Restraint, Convention of Elements for multiplicative damage or Band of Might for an insane toughness boost. - Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac can be a nice alternative for Cooldown Reduction but you have to lose a damage multiplier to equip it.
- In the Weapon slot we can use Messerschmidt’s Reaver or In-geom for Cooldown Reduction as well as Echoing Fury for the Movement Speed.
Season 28 Altar of Rites
Season 28 brings a brand new progression feature called the Altar of Rites that grants tremendous powers to your entire account in exchange for sacrifices. It requires you to farm Bounties, kill the Ubers, craft the Staff of Herding, and more. Completing all 26 of these tasks, along with sacrificing 6 Primal Ancients grants you unbelievable Damage, Defense, Quality of Life, Increased Drops, 3 Potion Super Powers, and the juicy Wings of Terror. Read the full guides on Unlocking the Altar and the Altar Mechanics by Raxxanterax and Chewingnom to learn everything about this fantastic Season!
Note: The suggested path assumes you are playing Solo and used the Challenge Rift Cache to help you level up.
Optimal Path
Node 2: Choose Anointed to gain a full set of 70 yellows from level 18-70!
Node 6: Rush to gain double Bounties to help unlock other Nodes in the Altar.
Nodes 7-14: These are the last Nodes you can gain until the Challenge Rift resets. Take at least 1 Node at the bottom of each path to unlock all 3 Potion Super Powers. Pick up the Mirror Node at the top for a colossal 41% extra XP all season. Remember to unlock Father once you clear GR70 solo and have your first Primal!
Nodes 15-26: Pick up the final Quality of Life, Damage, and Defense Nodes (in that order) to finish the Altar.
Potion Super Powers: Take Father first, then Mother, and finally Mortal.
Disclaimer: The Mortal and Mother Potions require you to salvage 2 and 3 Primals respectively. Unlock them as soon as you have those materials as they don’t cost a point!
Use the Scroll Bar to see Altar Progression
Global Stat Priorities
Aim for around 45-50% Cooldown Reduction to ensure permanent Wrath of the Berserker, use Boon of Bul-kathos and complementary Cooldown Reduction items like Messerschmidt’s Reaver or In-geom.
Rend damage does not scale with Attack Speed so we do not need to reach any Breakpoints here!
1. Do the Challenge Rift for the materials to cube Legendary Powers. You can complete this once a week for additional resources and we always update the guide for you!
2. Gather the full Wrath of the Wastes set. Each piece can be gambled from Kadala for Bloodshards. Do not salvage any duplicate pieces you find! Instead convert them to another part of the set with Recipe 4 in Kanai’s Cube. If you have extra materials you can use Recipe 3 to craft the remaining pieces, but this is expensive and not recommended for new players.
3. Gamble from Kadala in this order:
- The full Wrath of the Wastes set
- Create a level 1 Barbarian and gamble for Band of Might
- Lamentation
- Warzechian Armguards and Nemesis Bracers, Mortick’s Brace for other variants
- Rechel’s Ring of Larceny, keep Convention of Elements, Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac, Focus and Restraint for the other variants
4. Craft using Recipe 3 in Kanai’s Cube in this order:
- Mighty Weapon to get Ambo’s Pride
- Swords to get In-geom
- Two-Handed Axes to get Messerschmidt’s Reaver
- Maces to get Echoing Fury
- Rings to get Rechel’s Ring of Larceny, keep Convention of Elements, Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac, Focus and Restraint for the other variants
- Anything from the Gamble list in Step 3 that you haven’t already acquired.
5. Do Bounties to acquire several important items for this build:
- Act 1: Ring of Royal Grandeur
- Act 2: Gloves of Worship
- Act 3: Avarice Band
- Bounty Turn In: Recipes for Captain Crimson’s Trimmings, Sage’s Journey and Cain’s Destiny (for your follower)
6. There is one final required piece to piece to acquire, Squirt’s Necklace. With amulets being so expensive to gamble and craft, we’ll have to search for it to drop in Nephalem and Greater Rifts. It can drop on any class so try to group up with friends when possible to share your loot! Finally you can spice up your season by doing some Ubers to craft Hellfire Amulet (recipe can be bought from Squirt the Peddler in Act 2).
7. Use Primordial Ashes in Kanai’s Cube with the new Curiosity of Lorath Nahr recipe to obtain a free Crafted Primal Ancient. Since you can only equip one of them, choosing the right item to focus matters! Great candidates are Weapons, Offhands, Jewelry or any item with an important multiplier. With that in mind, we recommend getting one of the following items:
- Pauldrons of the Wastes (go for Rend Damage, Cooldown Reduction and Area Damage)
- Lamentation
- Band of Might
- Squirt’s Necklace

- Bane of the Trapped is the most common damage gem, and as we are a melee character, the rank 25 effect will slow all enemies within 15 yards providing us a flat 1.6 damage multiplier.
- Taeguk grants us up to 80% additive damage as well as a 20% Armor buff and is a great offensive gem since we are a channeling based build.
- Other popular choices are Bane of the Stricken for solo push, Boon of the Hoarder for Torment farming and Molten Wildebeest’s Gizzard for a shield bonus in combination with Squirt’s Necklace for double damage, some additional toughness and insane healing.
- Rend as our main damage dealer.
- Whirlwind to apply our Rend using Ambo’s Pride.
- Furious Charge or Ground Stomp are used to proc Band of Might for a massive defensive boost, while also being used to maintain our Focus & Restraint buff for the 1.5 damage multipliers (for a total 2.25 damage multiplier).
- Wrath of the Berserker for an overall stat boost and Crowd Control immunity. Pair this skill with a Cooldown Reduction item like In-geom and/or Boon of Bul-kathos.
- The last two skill slots vary a lot from version to version. Popular choices are Battle Rage, Ignore Pain, War Cry and Sprint.
- Rampage is the strongest Barbarian passive there is with its 25% buff to total Strength. It provides a massive boost to both offense and defense (Armor).
- Boon of Bul-kathos is used to help us achieve 100% Wrath of the Berserker uptime.
- Other damage options include Brawler, Ruthless, and Berserker Rage. Nerves of Steel can be used as a defensive option.

Patch 2.7.0 revamped the follower system giving all 3 hirelings new powers and the emanate system. The first thing you should do is read our complete follower guide and remember the key takeaways:
- The emanation system allows followers to share certain legendary and set powers with you. The most important ones are: The Flavor of Time, Nemesis Bracers, Avarice Band, Sage’s Journey and Cain’s Destiny. Click the guide above for the full list.
- Follower’s powers are based on their main stat (maxed at 25.000, but they have a 2.5x multiplier so you only need 10.000). This means we stack Intelligence on the Enchantress, Dexterity on the Scoundrel and Strength on the Templar.
- Guardian’s Jeopardy (3) Bonus works for followers by improving their inherent stat multiplier from x2.5 to x3.5, making it slightly easier to hit the 25,000 main stat threshold if needed.
- Followers share 20% of their Experience, Magic and Gold Find stats with you.
- Legendary gems do not work on followers, except Esoteric Alteration and Mutilation Guard.
- Cooldown Reduction does not work for any follower skill except the Templar’s Heal.
- Followers never deal significant damage; you’re on your own to clear the content.
With these in mind, let’s get into our recommendations for this build.
Select Follower
For T16 we recommend this Enchantress setup because she is the only follower that gives Cooldown Reduction, allowing you to spam your abilities more. Since this is T16 content, she’ll stay alive with Esoteric Alteration and Mutilation Guard and use Hand of the Prophet to gain all skills. This will give us Cooldown Reduction, Elemental Damage, Reduced Damage from Ranged Attacks, Armor, Attack Speed, and a Cheat Death.
Stat Priorities:Since we do not have the immortality focus, we need to stack survivability on our Enchantress.
Intelligence > Vitality > Life % > Armor > All Resistance > Life Per Hit > Attack Speed.
Key Items:
- The Flavor of Time: For double duration on Pylons.
- Nemesis Bracers: For extra Elites, Death’s Breaths and In-geom procs.
- Avarice Band: For the insane pickup radius.
- Ring of Royal Grandeur: To complete our sets.
- Gloves of Worship: For 10 Minute Shrine Buffs.
- Sage’s Journey: For double Death’s Breaths.
- Cain’s Destiny: For 25% more Greater Rift Keystones.
With Ambo’s Pride our Whirlwind applies Rend and deals crazy amounts of damage. All other skills are there to buff your toughness, damage and movement speed. You want to Whirlwind almost all the time, never having to cast Rend itself in speed runs. Keep up all your buffs: Wrath of the Berserker, Battle Rage, Ignore Pain, War Cry and Sprint. Make sure to use Furious Charge or Ground Stomp to keep Band of Might and Focus & Restraint buffs.
This is a very hardcore friendly build as long as you make sure to always use Band of Might and Nerves of Steel.

Nephalem Rifts
I never would have believed that we would see a Barbarian that could rival the Monk’s Wave of Light speed build, but it happened with Patch 2.6.7!
Concept
The idea here is to stack loads of Movement Speed while still being able to kill all enemies within seconds by just passing through them. We keep Rend with Bloodbath on the skill bar to spread the Rend to more enemies as our Whirlwind skill applies the rune automatically.
Gameplay
Overall easy gameplay, crazy damage & awesome speed, all you need for a god tier Torment build! Keep up damage & toughness buffs and spin to win!
Setups
For group Torment farming we take Nemesis Bracers, Avarice Band and The Flavor of Time back into the setup. You can also add Wreath of Lightning instead of Bane of the Trapped if you have enough damage and want more Movement Speed.
Furthermore you can drop Band of Might to equip Stone of Jordan and switch Furious Charge to Battle Rage Ferocity on your skill bar for even more Movement Speed. Combine that with Bul-Kathos’s Solemn Vow and Bul-Kathos’s Warrior Blood as weapons for insane Fury generation and you got the perfect chill farming build!
For all the people interested here is a Gameplay Video.
Bounties
Concept
Just like in the Nephalem Rifts we stack plenty of movement speed buffs together with decent toughness buffs. We do not need Nemesis Bracers here as we can ignore most shrines, just finish the bounties as fast as possible! The added toughness and damage from Mantle of Channeling helps out nicely instead!
Gameplay
The Gameplay here is very similar to Nephalem Rifts. Use Wrath of the Berserker and Ignore Pain to gain crowd control immunity when you teleport from bounty to bounty and trigger clickables! Keep up your buffs and spin around until the bounty is done!
Setups
You can drop Messerschmidt’s Reaver and take In-geom to keep Wrath of the Berserker up more constantly if you prefer. Feel free to cube Ambo’s Pride and add Bul-Kathos’s Solemn Vow as well as Bul-Kathos’s Warrior Blood as weapons for insane Fury generation and Movement Speed.
GR Solo Speeds
The Whirlwind Rend Barb is one of the strongest builds for solo farming of any kind and shines especially in experience farming as the build can run mid tier Rift levels very effectively due to its somewhat unique mechanic:
Concept
Moving while doing crazy amounts of damage!
You can run around Greater Rift Level 105 and even all the way up to 120 with above 10k Paragons for crazy amounts of experience and loot.
Gameplay
Keep up Band of Might at all times and go from elite to elite. The majority of trash monsters should die on the way as you spin trough. You need to Furious Charge at least once every 5 seconds for the full Focus & Restraint buff and so that Band of Might stays up. The shield provided by Molten Wildebeest’s Gizzard should protect your double damage buff from Squirt’s Necklace most of the time. Cast Wrath of the Berserker on cooldown and keep up the buffs from Sprint and Ignore Pain to blast around like crazy.
Setups
At high Paragon (around 5,000) you can drop Band of Might, equip Captain Crimson’s Thrust & Captain Crimson’s Silk Girdle, cube Ring of Royal Grandeur & Lamentation. This version is slightly stronger but a lot more squishy.
GR Solo Push
Concept
Below under Rend mechanics we talk about how only self casts proc Rend Area Damage. This is exactly what we need do here:
Gameplay
1. Try to find an open map for your first floor where you can comfortably drag elites along with Ancient Spear Rage Flip.
2. Create a huge group of monsters using your Rage Flip, while channeling Whirlwind to stay alive.
3. Once everything is grouped up nicely with a pixel Ground Stomp start doing manual Rends. Focus on your Physical Convention of Elements rotation to deal most damage. Alternate between doing a tick of Whirlwind and casting 2 Rends manually to benefit from Area Damage. Keep the defensives buffs from Mantle of Channeling and Wrath of the Wastes (4) Bonus.
4. Try to stand in Oculus Ring from your follower as often as possible.
5. Drag elite packs along and always fight them with trash around to gain rift progression and utilize Area Damage.
6. Pray for a Conduit Pylon to finish off most elite packs with The Flavor of Time.
7. For the Rift Guardian we use the tremendous power of Bane of the Stricken stacking with our Whirlwind skill. Rift Guardians that summon minions later on like Saxtris and Binder are ideal as we can get additional Rend procs from Bloodbath and nice value from our Area Damage, which is further enhanced by Ruthless for crazy damage output in the final stage.
Setups
At super high Paragon levels (8,000+) you can try the Captain Crimson Trimmings set Setup without Band of Might. Take in Boon of Bul-Kathos instead of Nerves of Steel if you have problem to maintain Wrath of the Berserker.
Here is a Gameplay Video.
GR Group Speeds
Concept & Group Synergy
The WW Rend Barb as trash killer has awesome AOE possibilities with Rend Bloodbath. This rune together with Lamentation allows you to stack up to 4 Rends on the target (2 normal ones and 2 bloodbath procs). We usually add an Impale Demon Hunter or a Heaven’s Fury Crusader because they provide very high single target damage to kill Elites and the Rift Guardian, while providing awesome buffs to the group such as Companion and Marked for Death. Add a zMonk to maintain our buff from Squirt’s Necklace as much as possible. You can basically say a Monk is like a 2nd Rend Barb as you gain double damage from Squirt’s Necklace alone, while zMonk still provides massive toughness and damage buffs by himself. zBarb is the other standard support in this kind of speed runs as it provides the full package of toughness, damage buffs and pulling abilities. A zNec is not very useful because Rend, as all other damage over time skills, does not work with any critical hit chance debuffs on enemies. That means Iceblink does not work with DoT skills either, it is just used to buff the Demon Hunter or Crusader Rift Guardian Killer.
Setups
The planner on the right side starts off with the high base damage 2h build using Messerschmidt’s Reaver to keep a nice up time on Wrath of the Berserker. In this setup we use Band of Might to gain 5 times our toughness and we want to proc our Focus & Restraint rings with Furious Charge every 5 seconds anyways our up time should be 100%. Bane of the Powerful is used here to gain some more damage to Elites as well as damage reduction from the elites. For our passive skills we take a full offensive approach. Feel free to add a defensive passive like Nerves of Steel or Superstition, if you feel you are dying too much.
On the left planner we switch from a 2h to a dual wield setup. We take Sun Keeper to make use of the higher base average damage as well as the elite damage. We add Ambo’s Pride to free up the cube slot for Messerschmidt’s Reaver again. As this is the low paragon setup we also stay with Band of Might for 5 times more toughness, but if you are high Paragon (3000+), switch the cube to Convention of Elements for the extra damage.
Echoing Nightmare
- Switch Ignore Pain to Threatening Shout Falter to increase DPS.
- Reroll Area Damage to Average Damage as we do not need to make huge pulls.
Gameplay
- Click Speed Pylon instantly to boost your mobility and dodge Green Meteors.
- Around Wave 90, click Channeling Pylon and Power Pylon.
- After Wave 100, use Conduit Pylon.
- At Wave 122, stop attacking and run to the corner to let the timer run out.
Keep up Band of Might at all times. The majority of trash monsters should die on the way as you spin trough. You need to Furious Charge at least once every 5 seconds for the full Focus & Restraint buff and so that Band of Might stays up. Cast Wrath of the Berserker on cooldown and keep up your Sprint buff to blast around like crazy.
Video
Mechanics
- Has a base duration of 6 seconds, not 5 (the tooltip is straight up incorrect).
- Self-cast damage is only calculated off Mainhand. The Off-hand can be any off-rolled weapon for supporting purposes (Cooldown Reduction, Area Damage etc.). Whirlwind, and therefore Ambo’s Pride, oscillates between both weapons.
- Scales with Critical Hit Chance & Critical Hit Damage but can not crit:
Each Rend tick has (1 + Critical Hit Chance * Critical Hit Damage) as a separate multiplier.
Only Critical Hit Chance and Critical Hit Damage that you see in your detail sheet, will scale it. Any debuff-Critical Hit Chance (Iceblink, Multishot Wind Chill, Corpse Lance Brittle Touch, Bash Onslaught, etc.) will not scale Rend. - Battle Rage Bloodshed has no effect in regards to Rend damage (except for the base rune crit), because Rend does not crit.
- Rend instance snapshots Critical Hit Chance upon cast.
- Self-cast Rend does proc Area Damage.
- Rend Bloodbath explosions count as a separate Rend instance but are capped to 2 due to Lamentation. This makes Bloodbath by far the best damage rune (effectively doubling the damage output as long as you are constantly killing stuff).
- Rend ticks every 12 Frames (0.2 seconds). Damage is accumulated and displayed every 48 Frames (0.8 seconds).
- Ambo’s Pride has a proc coefficient of 1 and applies a Rend on each Whirlwind tick.
- Rend applied by Ambo’s Pride does not proc Area Damage.
- Applies the equipped rune from the skill bar.
- Oscillates between Main-hand and Off-hand, just like Whirlwind.
- Can’t exceed the base Lamentation cap of two stacks.
Pro 2H:
- 2-Handed Weapons gives 69% higher base average damage for your Rend:
- This is the average 2-handed Mace damage divided by average 1-handed Mace + average Mighty Weapon damage.
- If you factor in the 130% Critical Hit Damage of the second gem in the Off-hand weapon the total damage difference is 39.8%.
Pro Dual Wield:
- 20% more Cooldown Reduction for more Wrath of the Berserker, Call of the Ancients and Squirt’s Necklace uptime.
- 130% more Critical Hit Damage as you gain a second gem in the Offhand.
- 20% more Elite damage due to Sun Keeper.
- 20% attack speed meaning faster Rend build up at 25 frames or 0.833 second instead of 30 frames or 1 second (25 frames breakpoint on Whirlwind instead of 30).
- Around 1600 more Main Stat and Armor as you gain an extra roll and augment from the Offhand.
- Faster manual Rend casts for Area Damage.
In the end both setups are very close to one another. Depending on the paragon and other stats 2-Hand is slightly more damage but less toughness. I personally can’t really recommend one, I only played 2-Hand in the group video above, so again nice diversity! Just play with whatever good weapons you can find!
Summary
- Put together the core items and acquire the full Wrath of the Wastes set.
- Overall very powerful build that can be used to farm anything in the game without changing gear too much!
- Very tanky and hardcore friendly especially with the Band of Might setup!
- The strongest solo push build Barb currently has!
- Easy to play the base version but difficult to master in Solo Pushes!
